Pupillary Distance

What is Pupillary Distance (PD)?

Pupillary distance (PD) is the distance measurement, in millimeters, between the centers of the pupils of your eyes. This measurement can be taken for both distance and near and is different from person to person.

What happens if I do not have my PD measurement?

Contact your eye doctor or optician who has taken this measurement in the past and request that they provide you with your PD.    The measurement is actually part of your eye exam so there should be no question that they will provide it to you.

Can I Measure my own PD?

In order to place your online eyeglass order with eSunsaitons.com you will need to know your pupillary distance (PD). This measurement—which was described above is the distance between the pupils of your eyes.

When you had you last eye exam most likely the doctor or technician measured your PD. However your PD measurements may not be noted on your eyeglass prescription.

TO MEASURE YOUR OWN PD (Pupillary Distance):

  • Hold a mm ruler against your brow (print our sample mm ruler below)
  • Align the ruler's 0 mm mark with the center of the left pupil
  • The millimeter line that aligns with the center of the right pupil is the PD
  • Adults generally have a PD within 54-68 mm, while children have a PD within 41-55 mm.

Why does the PD measurement matter when the laboratory is manufacturing my eyeglasses?

In order to manufacture your eyeglass lenses properly and provide you with the very best vision through your new prescription lens the optical center of your lenses must be centered with your pupils.  If this measurement is incorrect you may not be able to focus clearly.
